Last summer, I picked up an 878 Automaster at a local gun show. I had never seen/heard of one, but it attracted my interest enough for me to buy it.
Made from 1959-1963, the Automaster appears to not have been very popular. Mine is a first year model. I must say, I have been pleasantly surprised by this old girl. She's smooth shooting, takes any ammo I put through her and seems to just, well, "fit" me.
It may not be the most glamorous or modern semi auto 12 gauge, and it might be eclipsed by the 1100, but the 878 certainly is not a dud.

Yes...it is a fine looking shotgun.

I had an old shell get stuck in it (the shell was the issue and not the gun) and I broke the bolt handle. Got the parts and fixed it and she just kept chugging along. I'm reasonably certain I am going to use this gun for dove when the season starts.

Looking forward to dove and spring gobbler myself...

Hmmm. 878 That one got by me. Had to look up a review. Improved model but blown away by the 1100 in 63. Sure looks like some good old fashioned quality. I missed out on beauties like the Model 31 pump.

Well, ladies and gentlemen....It looks like I have found another 878. I'm gonna try and pick it up if the price is right.
Mine is from August 1959 and the one I have found is from May, 1959. |
