Happily shooting high pheasant clays today and had a serious jam.
The flat rear end of the forend support assembly snapped off.
Threw the broken flat bit in the bin and carried on without a malfunction.
This raises the question as to what this part does and am I going to cause damage by not replacing it ?

It does support the fore end and shims the barrel for a tight fit to the receiver. I would replace it ASAP, but I have shot with a broken one before. Just don't go twisting on the barrel or pounding on the rear of the fore end.

Thanks again Virginian.
On leaving the range I visited the resident gunsmith. Luckily he has a box of Remington bits , which included an unused forend support which is now fitted. I'm a little confused about the forend support. Is it a moving part ? And why should it break? |
|
It should not move. The action bars pass thru the wings. The current design is about the third or fourth iteration. Some break and some don't.

Fitted another new forend support to my other 1100 and could not insert the barrel which was jamming up about an inch short.
Then I slid the forend support forward of where it should sit and was able to seat the barrel. This really doesn't seem correct as I assume that on recoil the action bar is going to ram the forend support into the gap under the barrel and possibly result in damage. Any thoughts? |

It's supposed to be tight. Try getting the barrel started into the receiver with the support in the right place relative to the barrel and then push the barrel and the support in together.

This is VERY tight !
I put the gun upright with the muzzle on a piece of wood and pushed down with all my weight and got no movement whatsoever. It's as though the forend support is the wrong part. Will double check everything in case something os misassembled then try as suggested and get back to you. Thanks. EDIT..... it took a while for the penny to drop but I think I understand this now. This part is more or less a barrel shim and for some reason , like me , it's a but on the thick side. Have tried fitting a different barrel and it it still tight but not as. So I will hand fit this part accordingly. |

Started from scratch and did a full action strip and removed forend support (FS) and then checked evrything was where it should be.
Replaced FS and reassembled. Hey presto the barrel (and the others) went in snuggly using only one hand. Tried many times to duplicate problem and did once with the FS forward of the action. Again Virgians advice worked a treat. Thanks. |

Good deal. Always glad to get an 1100 running again.

Shot about 300 rounds thru my 1100 12 ga at a sporting clays fund raiser yesterday. Gun ate the ammo up with no problems. I was cleaning it this morning and the forend support came out in three pieces. The gun never quit. Kinda clawed up the inside of the forstock though. New parts are ordered. Needed to order new o rings and a stock bit anyway.
