So I finally had the chance to visit the range with my brand spanking new 597 on Saturday. It came with the new style black magazine, which worked flawlessly, along with both of the keep shooting mags. The scope wasn't zeroed, but that went quickly and soon it was showing respectable groups. I ran through 50 rounds of Remington 22 Thunderbolts in no time flat and had a very enjoyable time. Not a single FTF or FTE. I'll be taking more than 50 rounds next time.

Good to hear! I know they dropped the 22 magnum version a while back. Sorry to hear but I know Ruger dropped their 10/22 magnum version also quite a while back. Think they called it the 96/22M. Heard they ran into problems with the "power curve" of the longer cartridge. Remington 597 does look like a great semi-auto for sure and like the barrel length.

As I said, quite happy so far. I have some other ammo to try for better groups, Winchester, CCI, Aguila and Norma. My wife has a 10/22, it seems happiest with the CCI, be interesting to see which the 597 prefers.

I grabbed one immediately when I heard that too, awhile back. Handy lil' rifle to haul around in the woods.

Sure is Scorpion. That's why I bought the Ruger Compact 22 mag with the 18 inch tube. A bolt but handles and shoots super accurate with 40 grain CCIs and Remington 40 grain H.P. Next 22 with be a vintage one like a Rem 550.

I bought a Ruger American Rimfire 22WMR when they first came out, but am not a fan of Rugers plastic stock plus various inserts system. The rifle was accurate enough, but the ergonomics didn't impress me. And I am a rimfire guy, everything gets compared to my stable of vintage Remingtons, and this was no 582. Plus, the karma must have me because I've always had issues with Rugers rotary mags. Gimme a nice tube-fed any day, Speedmaster, Fieldmaster or Marlin Model 60 (have 3 of those!).

Scorpion 8: Sorry to hear you had probs with your 597M. I did too with the used one I bought. At first I thought it was the magazines, but it turned out to be the extractor. I bought a Volquartsen and now it works great! So, if you still have your 597M, try switching the extractor and it should work out.
Good Shooting to you!

Actually I've had no problems with my 597M, and I even replaced the extractor when I was having no issues. My comments referred to the Ruger American rimfire and those dang Ruger rotary mags. They just read my aura and quit working, or work so intermittently that it's frustrating. The 597/597M uses a straight feed magazine that is much more reliable in my book.
